MAX RESOURCE LIBRARY: Recent Reports on Women in the Workforce and Childcare Solutions for Working Parents

April 24, 2022

From Monster:

Multiple reports reveal that the coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately impacted women. The hardest hit industries happen to be predominately ones in which women work. During the pandemic, it’s typically been women who put their careers aside to assume childcare duties at home. A startling number of women dropped out of the workforce and even though women have been returning to the workforce, there is still a significant shortfall.

In the report, Women in the Workforce: Building Gender Equity in a Post-Pandemic World, several insights are provided about the current state of women in the workforce and what women need from their workplaces.

From the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation:

Access to high-quality child care is having a significant impact on the productivity of employers through their employees and the ability of these employers to meet their workforce needs. In the Employer Roadmap: Childcare Solutions for Working Parents, a number of factors are identified, such as:

  • Parents must balance their childcare options while making employment decisions. Those working non-traditional hours have more limited options.
  • Finding and retaining skilled talent was a top concern prior to the pandemic and this concern has only increased in these times.
  • Childcare responsibilities fall disproportionately on female caregivers, especially women of color.
  • Employers committed to diversity of their workforce should understand how childcare challenges impact their ability to recruit, retain, and grow skilled female employees.

Fortunately, employers now have a roadmap to work with their employees in addressing childcare challenges.

MAX Leadership Network Convenes to Learn About the Eds & Meds Industry Cluster in the Atlanta Region

April 16, 2022

On April 11, 2022, the MAX Leadership Network convened to learn more about the impact of key anchor institutions for the Atlanta region – universities and hospitals – from Sam Williams, Professor of the Practice, with the Urban Studies Institute at Georgia State University.

Williams joined MAX to share findings from his team’s recent research study on the importance of metro Atlanta’s universities and hospitals to the Atlanta economy and how greater collaboration amongst such institutions would have untold economic development impacts for our region.  “Eds & Meds have more jobs than all of the Fortune 500 headquarters combined,” says Williams, “and account for more than $4 billion in new construction underway.” As an industry cluster, he discussed how these institutions share both challenges and opportunities especially when it comes to workforce and supply chain needs. And as Williams noted, anchor institutions such as these not only stay where they are rooted, they help define a community’s brand, are not susceptible to economic swings, and bring about significant new investment and jobs as they grow.

For our first in-person gathering in over two years, MAX Leadership Network attendees were also treated to a preview of the new Goodwill of North Georgia Metropolitan Parkway Career Center, which served as meeting host. Catering the event was Sister Nina’s Kitchen, a Goodbiz graduate.

Before the meeting closed, MAX Vice Chair Jenny Taylor with Goodwill of North Georgia led the network in a conversation regarding how workforce partners are successfully engaging with workers in these challenging times.
