MAX RESOURCE LIBRARY: Recent Reports on Women in the Workforce and Childcare Solutions for Working Parents

April 24, 2022

From Monster:

Multiple reports reveal that the coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately impacted women. The hardest hit industries happen to be predominately ones in which women work. During the pandemic, it’s typically been women who put their careers aside to assume childcare duties at home. A startling number of women dropped out of the workforce and even though women have been returning to the workforce, there is still a significant shortfall.

In the report, Women in the Workforce: Building Gender Equity in a Post-Pandemic World, several insights are provided about the current state of women in the workforce and what women need from their workplaces.

From the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation:

Access to high-quality child care is having a significant impact on the productivity of employers through their employees and the ability of these employers to meet their workforce needs. In the Employer Roadmap: Childcare Solutions for Working Parents, a number of factors are identified, such as:

  • Parents must balance their childcare options while making employment decisions. Those working non-traditional hours have more limited options.
  • Finding and retaining skilled talent was a top concern prior to the pandemic and this concern has only increased in these times.
  • Childcare responsibilities fall disproportionately on female caregivers, especially women of color.
  • Employers committed to diversity of their workforce should understand how childcare challenges impact their ability to recruit, retain, and grow skilled female employees.

Fortunately, employers now have a roadmap to work with their employees in addressing childcare challenges.

  • One in five have altered their livelihoods.
  • The preponderance [of those unemployed] earned less than $50,000 per year.
  • More than 1-in-10 have left multiple jobs during the pandemic.
  • Nearly half were terminated or had their position eliminated.
  • The majority are not actively job searching, and less than half are anxious to go back to work.

From Cushman & Wakefield:

One thing is clear: the purpose of the office workplace is changing. The pandemic-induced work-from-home experiment has altered perspectives on work, flexibility and the office. When we get to the other side of this experience and COVID-19 is no longer a lingering health concern, no one is expecting workers to come into the office to primarily answer emails—that and any other heads-down tasks can be done anywhere. So, what purpose does the office serve in the future? How will that purpose impact how occupiers think about their portfolio footprints, location strategy and office layouts? What are the implications of the changing nature of office on office owners, corporate users and civic leaders?

From Monster:

In a world still very much at the mercy of pandemic-related interruptions, 2022 is poised to have global employers and candidates grappling with some big challenges – the most prominent among them, a lingering uncertainty.

However, the annual Future of Work Global Survey conducted by Monster also revealed that despite pandemic stops and starts, there are hints of optimism and hope for increased hiring and a new and improved work environment…that is, if employers and job seekers can get on the same page.
